In After Colony 180, the five Gundam scientists all went into hiding; each of them took a copy of the original Wing Gundam Zero design. Doctor J decided to keep true to the original design and create a Gundam that mirrored Wing Zero’s design. Armed with Vulcan guns, beam sabers, and machine cannons, the Wing Gundam also has a single buster rifle capable of precision destruction of single mobile suits or multiple suit destruction. Much like its prototype design, the “Gundam 01” was also capable of transforming into a fighter like “bird mode” for additional mobility and atmospheric flight. Made of Gundanium alloy, Wing Gundam could take a beating and dish it right back. From heavy weapons, missile hit, and self destruct packages left Wing Gundam left the exterior of the suit relatively intact. Under the hands of its well trained pilot, Heero Yuy, Wing Gundam was the a nightmare for any opponent on the other side of its buster rifle.

The five Gundam scientist who designed the Tallgeese collaborated before going their separate ways. After designing the Wing Zero, the five Gundam scientist went underground and designed 5 machines based upon Wing Zero's design. Doctor J created the XXXG-01W as a near mirror of the Wing Zero. Fully armed with twin beam sabers, twin vulcan guns, twin machine cannons, Wing Gundam's weaponry was topped off by its powerful "buster rifle," capable of firing an energy beam capable of destroying multiple enemy mobile suits in a single shot. The buster rifle's weakness was that it was only good for three shots before it needed to be recharged. "Gundam 01," as it was code-named by the OZ forces, was also capable of transforming into a fighter-like "bird mode" for added mobility & atmospheric flight.
Wing Gundam took as much punishment as it dished out. Built of nearly-indestructible gundanium alloy, the Wing Gundam could withstand everything from heavy weapons fire to direct missile hits (even its own self-destruct system left most of the mobile suit fairly intact). These factors made the Wing Gundam an extremely tough monster to stop when it was launched to Earth to fight OZ during Operation Meteor in AC 195. In the hands of its extremely well trained & suicidal pilot, Heero Yuy, almost nobody in the OZ forces could stop them. Even ace pilot Zechs Merquise was pushed to his limits when encountering the Wing Gundam with Heero Yuy in the cockpit.
